British actress and filmmaker Aruna Shields has achieved critical acclaim for lead roles in cinema releases worldwide. A Google Zeitgeist, she is one of the most popular names online and best known in Europe and India. Mixed race, multi-talented and versatile Aruna uses her certification in psychotherapy and mindfulness to produce conscious films and improve performance. Having just received her US Green Card she recently moved from London to LA.
Award winning Casting Director Des Hamilton chose Aruna for the lead in the epic adventure Ao, le dernier Néandertal (2010) after worldwide auditions. The film was produced by French cinema chain and studio UGC (now TF1), shortly after their Oscar-nominated Un prophète (2009). Aruna learned prehistoric languages and body movement for the role, and also wrote some of her own scenes.
Aruna was also headhunted by one of the largest studios in India, and launched to stardom as 'Maya' in action thriller Prince (2010). Her gymnastic and dance ability enabled her to do all her own stunts, including motorbike bungee jumps. When the film released worldwide she became the most sought after name in India. Her song 'Tere Liye' then became one of the biggest hits.
Other critically acclaimed lead roles include 'Nera', an artist's muse, in the avant-garde feature Mr. Singh/Mrs. Mehta (2010).
Born and brought up in the UK her earlier education includes a distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a broadcast degree from Central Saint Martins. Aruna began as a presenter for Channel One News before being spotted by an acting agent at a theatrical workshop. Aruna then went on theatre tours, won talent competitions, worked for the BBC, graced magazine covers, presented awards ceremonies and judged 'Women of Substance' at The Symphony Hall.
