Erich Maria Remarque - Biography

German novelist Remarque was born in Osnabruck in 1898. His first novel, the anti-war À l'ouest rien de nouveau (1930), was written in response to his experiences as a soldier in WWI, and published in 1929. He moved to Switzerland until 1939, when he emigrated to the U.S., where he lived and wrote until his death in 1970.
