Kay grew up in the small town of Fairfield, Iowa. She is the middle child of five sisters, and the daughter of Tim (a lawyer) and Jamie (a respiratory therapist).

BA in Theatre (Summa Cum Laude) from Gustavus Adolphus College. National Merit Scholar.
