Laurits was born on the island of Bornholm and raised in Copenhagen. From an early age he started painting and drawing and believed to be a painter like his father. But he realized that this job was too lonely and imagined that film making would be like painting, just with people as colors.
At age 15 he lived in Mexico for one year with his parents. This stay inspired him to go back 7 years later to shoot his first professional film "The Circle" (1996) in the desert of Oaxaca.
At age 29 he won an Oscar for his graduation film "Between Us" from The National Film School of Denmark. The year after he made first his feature film "Ambulance" (2005) for Nordisk Film and has since written and directed both fiction, documentary and a some rare mixes in between. He believes that fiction is staged fantasy and documentary is staged reality. There exists only subjective truth.
