Born in 1965 in Hollywood he was raised in Hollywood Hills' Los Feliz district The son of Richard "Rich" Moneymaker.
He graduated in 1992 at the University of California at Los Angeles with a BA in English Literature and in 1996 graduated Juris Doctorate at the University of Akron School of Law studying Copyright Law. Having founded the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization the year before graduating, Matt released his web site for the organization in lieu of taking the bar exam and went into Internet programming instead of being a lawyer. A year later he received his federal security clearance and worked at the Ventura County, California Pt. Hueneme Navy Base as a webmaster for the Naval Surface Warfare Center.
